CO2 Hop Extracts have been prepared from hops or hop pellets using carbon dioxide and contain the a-acids, β-acids and essential oils of hops. The supercritical CO2 extraction process obtains extracts in their most natural form.
The hops come into contact only with high-pressure carbon dioxide at low temperatures, which allows all the active ingredients to be preserved. Supercritical CO2 extraction is carried out without using any chemical solvents.
CO2 Hop Extract retains the aroma and the bittering potential of the hops from which it is made. Stability is excellent. Compared to raw hops or hop pellets, the extracts represent a convenient and concentrated alternative.
Since the brewing characteristics of the original hops are maintained, an early addition to the kettle imparts mainly bitterness while late addition will result in a carryover of the volatile oils in beer with aromatic "Iate hop" character. Utilization of α-acids in beer is slightly better compared to standard pellets and typically within the range of 32% - 38%.
Standardization of the α-acids content can be achieved by adjusting the weight of extract in each container. Container sizes range from 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) to 4 kg (8.8 lb), which corresponds to 200g to 2kg alphas, or non-returnable bulk containers are available in sizes ranging from 50 (110 lb) to 200 kg (441 lbs), which corresponds to 10 to 100 kg alphas, and which make for easy transport and storage. Extract should be cold stored at 0–5°C (32–41°F) and best if used within 8 years after processing.
